you know, it’s depressing that so many people say, ‘i’d eat better if it wasn’t so expensive.’ well, here’s a fun (i’m being facetious) fact: 78.5% of all government agricultural subsidies in the u.s go towards meat and dairy production. if meat and dairy weren’t so heavily subsidized they would be, roughly, ten times more expensive than they currently are (pork that’s $3.50 a pound would be, roughly, $30 a pound if all agricultural subsidies were removed). organic and locally grown food are expensive because they aren’t heavily subsidized. it really is that simple. it’s just a shame (probably a tragedy) that hundreds of billions of our tax dollars go to subsidize the meat and dairy industries, when almost no subsidies actually go to organic or local farmers.
