we just finished day 2 in the studio. day one was spent recording drums, and today we recorded acoustic guitar and piano. i took some pictures of the studio, and although it’s a very photogenic studio i thought i’d send some pictures of nyc looking particularly photogenic in the snow.
tomorrow kelli is coming in to record some vocals and we might try to record some organ parts, as well. currently i’m working on about 24 songs, but i think i’ll start narrowing them down soon. some of the songs are older (whispering wind, when it’s cold i’d like to die, great escape, etc), but most of them are new.
i really like trying to record a record with such specific restrictions placed on the creative process. well, more like ‘specific restriction’. at present the one rule is: no electronics. so everything has to be playable/recordable in the acoustic realm (with microphones). there’s something really satisfying about being in an old studio using old microphones and old pre-amps and an old mixing desk and recording in the way that people recorded 30 and 40 years ago. i have no idea what the final record might sound like, but i’m really enjoying this process, a lot. at some point i have to find an orchestra and figure out how to record them. that should be the, uh, hard part.
