Journal / up in the woods

i’m still up in the woods.
you know what’s remarkable about life in the woods?
just how dark it gets at night.
i grew up in the suburbs, and i’ve now lived in new york city for 22 years.
so i’m not accustomed to dark nights, as new york is never dark.
even at 5 a.m new york isn’t dark.
but up here…it gets really dark.
i was walking last night and i literally couldn’t see my hand in front of my face.
perhaps those of you who live in the country/woods are familiar with this phenomenon, but for me it’s very odd.
there are no other houses around, and the only lights that i can see are 2 streetlights, and they’re about 4 miles away.
if i lived up here permanently i would go to sleep at 9pm and wake up at dawn.
the difference between day and night in the city is not so huge.
but the difference up here is monumental.
during the day you can see. but at night you can’t see nothin’.
ok, it’s not late, but i’m going to sleep now.
g’night.
