i just watched a special on families from north and south korea being united after decades apart. it was so moving. how can you watch footage of a 70 year old woman being reunited with her son, whom she hasn’t seen for 40 years, and not cry?
there was this one shot of an older korean man sitting at a table talking to his family and he looked at a photo of his mother (whom he hadn’t seen in decades and who had passed away) and he just started sobbing.
i challenge anyone to watch this footage and not end up in tears.
the outpouring of emotion was so unspeakably powerful.
i can’t even imagine the horror of being seperated from your loved ones and your family members and your children by politics. to not see your children for 40 years because you happen to live on one side of a political boundary. it’s horrifying.
but this tv-special was so moving. this one image, of a woman sobbing uncontrollably after being reunited with her son, is something that i will keep in my head for a long time.
