Journal / Trent Lott

trent lott should resign.
he recently said that strom thurmond should’ve won the presidency in 1948 when thurmond ran on an aggressively racist/segregationist platform.
how can we have the leader of the senate making blatantly racist statements?
when strom thurmond ran for president in 1948 he said,
“”all the laws of washington and all the bayonets of the army cannot force the negroes into our homes, our schools, our churches.””
and a few days ago trent lott said:
“”we’re proud of it (mississippi voting for thurmond in 1948). and if the rest of the country had followed our lead, we wouldn’t have had all these problems over the years,””

problems?
civil rights and egalitarianism and de-segregation are, according to trent lott, problems?
the leader of the republican party in the senate thinks that civil rights is a ‘problem’???
he should resign. it’s an utter disgrace and it’s representative of the insidious racism that characterizes so much of the policy making of the republican party.
