so we just played in las vegas.
what an odd place is good old las vegas.
what interests me most about las vegas isn’t the gambling or the strip clubs or the all you can eat buffets or the dancing fountains or the faux european capitals, but what interests me the most are the people who actually live in las vegas. and their sense of fun and culture and identity.
las vegas is a cruise ship. and living in las vegas would be like living in a cruise ship. you would probably make friends with the other people who work on the cruise ship, but you would just assume that 98%of the people with whom you come into contact are transients.
if you live in atlanta and you meet someone you assume that they live in atlanta. if you live in spokane and you meet someone you assume that they live in spokane. if you live in las vegas and you meet someone you assume that they live somewhere other than las vegas. cos las vegas is a giant cruise ship.
and now we’re driving to phoenix. which will be hot. american hot, not european hot. nothing against europe, but american heat makes northern europeans melt. although southwestern heat is fairly benign as it’s, as you’ll hear 1,000,000 times if you talk to people from the southwest, a dry heat. which is true. the wet heat in nyc will broil you alive. the dry heat in the southwest will just make you crispy. yes, i’m talking about weather. i’ll stop now. and enjoy the drive.
i’ve seen so many places at night from a bus. i wonder if my perspective of things is warped. i assume that most of the world is dark and unpopulated. and it’s 4 a.m. and we’re in the very dark desert. not even street lights or truck stops. just ancient sea-bed.
