Journal / Touring Together

so tonight we played at paris-bercy for 12,000 people.
that’s a lot of people. and to put it in perspective, in 1996 we played in paris at a little punk rock club for 70 people.
at least i think that 70 people were there. it might have been less. and a few years ago we were opening up for soundgarden at the zenith for 5,000 people in paris and i remember thinking, ‘wow, i’ll never be able to play a place this big on my own.’

funny how things change. and they’ll probably change again.
who knows, in a few years i might once again be playing little punk rock clubs for 70 people.

thanks to everyone for coming out to our shows.and when i say ‘we’ or ‘our’ i’m not speaking in the royal sense.
i’m on tour with 30 people, so touring is thus a collective effort. it is one of the nice things about our tour, the egalitarianism.
at least from my perspective there really isn’t much of an inherent hierarchy in the way that people on tour deal with each other.
everyone has their specific job, and no job is any more or less important than any other. i don’t know how any touring musician could ever feel high and mighty when they see how the people around them work so hard.

well, we’re driving to barcelona now. and it’s 6 a.m.
so i might want to think about going to sleep at some point fairly soon.
