Journal / Things In NYC

it’s been a while since i’ve written an update that describes how things are in nyc. so here’s an update describing how things are, at least from my subjective perspective, in nyc:
things are fine.

p.s-actually things really do seem to be moving back to normal. there are slightly fewer tourists, but seeing as new york was so packed with tourists before the terrorist attack now the streets just feel a little bit more passable. i went for a walk on saturday through some neighborhoods and it felt like a nice, normal saturday. couples strolling around, tourist groups listening to tour guides describe how the first african american saint is buried in old st. patricks cathedral, 15 year old kids in oversize hip-hop/raver pants on broadway looking cool, etc. in other words, a normal saturday.
it did seem, though, as if a lot of people had come into new york this saturday to gauge for themselves if things had changed and if new york had become a city under siege. i hope that they weren’t disappointed to see new york in all of it’s saturday glory, sunny and full of people enjoying themselves.
and i went out to some bars and nightclubs over the weekend, and again, from my perspective everything seemed fine. people are still talking about where they were when the twin towers were destroyed, but not with the same sense of despair and disbelief that have characterized so many conversations over the last 3 weeks. so, at the risk of making any premature evaluations, it does seem as if new york is healing, and healing pretty quickly.
and i don’t know what the character of terrorist related discourse is in the rest of the world, but here in nyc i still haven’t heard anyone getting too worked up over calls for retribution. as i’ve written before, most people that i speak to in nyc just want to get on with living their lives and mourning their lost loved ones.

so, that’s my subjective update on how things are in nyc at present.
hopefully the normalcy and healing will continue.
