Journal / The Welfare Of The Animals

and not to go on about the same issue, but my problem with animal shelters in nyc has nothing to do with my own frustration and inconvenience, and it has everything to do with the welfare of the animals who are housed at these shelters.
most shelters are ‘kill shelters’, meaning that they kill animals who don’t get adopted. so if the shelters are poorly run and discourage people from adopting, then lots of animals will be needlessly killed.
that’s why this issue upsets me, because animals are being killed when they could otherwise be adopted.
i don’t give a shit if i have to be inconvenienced. my frustration or inconvenience counts as nothing when compared to life and death issues for the animals in the shelters. if the shelters were well run places with helpful employees then more animals would be adopted and fewer animals would be killed.
and if you have great shelters where you live, that’s wonderful. i wish that we had well run, non-beaurocratic shelters here in nyc that were staffed by conscientious and helpful employees.
my only good experiences in shelters have come through contact with the volunteers who help the animals. and even the volunteers complain about how poorly run the shelters are.
