Journal / The Pacific Northwest

now we’re driving from seattle to san fran.
over some very bumpy roads.
i have to say that i really like the pacific northwest.
the 3 main coastal cities, portland, seattle, vancouver,
make interesting urban sisters of a sort.
it’s strange, as an east-coaster, to imagine what it would
be like to live in a city where the nearest very-big
cities are hundreds and hundreds of miles away.
growing up in connecticut there was always a very
big city a few miles away.
new york was 30 miles away.
boston was 70 miles away.
philadelphia was 80 miles away.
etc.
boswash.
the megalopolis.
the acela corridor.
it really is kind of like one big city when looked at from
a less built-up perspective.
the west of the united states is just so different from the east of
the united states in terms of size and topography.
back east you drive for 8 hours and you pass through tons of cities.
drive from d.c to maine and you pass through:
baltimore
wilmington
trenton
newark
new york
stamford
new haven
new london
providence
boston.
drive from boise to seattle and you pass through…wilderness, for the most part.
it certainly engenders a different mind-set when it comes
to space and distance.
everyone should drive across the united states at least once just
to get a sense of how big it is.
well, that’s what i think, anyway.
g’night.
