Journal / The Fires

if anyone is reading this update and works for the nyc fire department i would like to ask you a question. well, first i would like to express my heart-felt appreciation for the rescue work that you’ve been doing. the firefighters in nyc have become legendary over the last week. working tirelessly even in the face of great loss. they are our new heroes. well, all of the rescue workers are our new heroes.

but my question…how much longer are the fires going to be burning? i, rather naively, had thought that the torrential rains of thursday night would have helped to put out the fires.
but it’s day 6 and the fires seem to be raging as seriously as ever.
there’s a never ending giant plume of smoke over lower manhattan and brooklyn, and i’m curious as to how long the fires will be burning. is there a web-site where an individual can get information on the progress being made in fighting the fires?
if someone could let me know, that would be appreciated. thanks.

a strange thing about the tragedy is the way in which new yorkers are responding.
a few of my friends in new york are planning on leaving as fast they can. whereas a lot of people, including myself, wouldn’t leave if we were paid to. there’s this sense of determination among a lot of new yorkers.
this sense that although these may be difficult times we’re not going to go anywhere.
which might be admirable or foolhearty depending upon how circumstances develop.
oops, is it ‘foolhearty’ or ‘foolhardy’?
‘foolhardy’ looks better. but i have no idea. ‘foolhearty’ would seem to make more sense, linguistically.

there’s also this sense among a lot of new yorkers that mayor giuliani has been doing an amazing job during the last week. i wouldn’t be surprised if there was a city wide referendum on extending term limits for incumbent mayors. funny how circumstances change. i do have to admit that giuliani’s behaviour throughouth the tragedy has been impressive. a lot of new yorkers, (even liberal commie pinkos like my friends…) are looking at our mayor in a different light.

well, it’s late. not too late, 3 a.m, actually.
but i want to get some more work done before i go to sleep, so goodnight and take care.
