did you ever see the movie ‘donnie darko’?
we just watched it while driving from san francisco to washington state and i thought it was terriffic. ultimately very confusing, but terriffic. i often wonder why movies like ‘donnie darko’ and ‘mothman prophecies’ don’t get more positive attention.
smart, interesting, idiosyncratic, mysterious movies. they deserve support and accolades.
i read a quote in this weeks new yorker that disturbed me cos it struck me as being far too true.
david denby wrote: ‘i think that many editors and reporters have apparently convinced themselves that commerce is hip and that talent and art are boring or beside the point.’ he’s right, unfortunately. it does seem as if the majority of people writing about music or film tend to write from a cynical, market-driven perspective. which in some ways is kind of unavoidable given the markets dominance in the world of creative expression over the last 7 years.
in other news…we’re at the gorge, which is the most beautiful venue in the world. i’ve written about it before, but it’s basically a big outdoor stage that overlooks a huge river in a canyon that is 30 miles long and 5 miles wide. it’s stunning. on a hot and beautiful and cloudless day. and there are rattlesnakes here. i’m going to go and talk to the rattlesnakes now. maybe they’ll let me lie with them on the parking lot.
