Journal / Softie

i’m such a softie…
there’s an advertisement for a cd of classic love songs, and everytime that it comes on the television i find myself getting all misty.
maybe i should just buy this collection of sappy love songs and have a little romantic party of one. even the really sappy ones make me feel kind of wistful and misty…like ‘i want to know what love is’ by foreigner. ‘time after time’ by cindy lauper. etc. i’m so classy, huh…
i’m sure that i’ve written about my deep and abiding love for romantic comedies and sappy love songs. if the truth be told, i’ve never seen a romatic comedy that i didn’t love. i know, it’s shameful. but even stuff like ‘notting hill’ kind of gets to me. and then there’s my favourite romantic comedy of all time, ‘the wedding singer’.
i know, i know, my tastes do not exactly run into the realm of highbrow cinema.
and let’s see, the best love songs of all time…’first time ever i saw your face’ by roberta flack, ‘purple rain’ by prince, ‘nothing compares 2 u’ by sinead o’connor (written by prince, of course), ‘i only have eyes for you’ by the flamingoes, ‘jealous guy’ by roxy music (written by john lennon), ‘chances are’ by johnny mathis, ‘oh girl’ by the chi-lites…
see, my enthusiasm for a good love song is quite deep.
and slow dancing. nothings better than a good slow dance with someone you’re in love with. and it’s the perfect dance for cliche’d white guys like me who aren’t very good dancers. cos during a slow dance you just kind of stand there and move a little bit, with all of the focus being on the nice, subtle things. no actual dancing skills are required for a good slow dance. which makes it perfect for someone like me and my rythmically challenged brethren.
yes, the best love song of all time has to be ‘first time ever i saw your face’ by roberta flack. if you don’t know her version of this song you really owe it to yourself to acquire it somehow. it’s stunning. well, by my standards. and given my rather hopeless enthusiasm for love songs you might be safe in saying that my objectivity is fairly well compromised. but it’s still a beautiful song.
oh, i forgot to mention ‘lets don’t ever blow our thing’ by isaac hayes. one of the best slow-dance songs. and then there’s ‘true’ by spandau ballet, which has it’s great moments but then it gets a bit too loud and bombastic in the middle around the sax solo. if only the spandaus had restrained themselves just a bit in making ‘true’ they could’ve had one of the best slow dance songs of all time. and it’s not even really a love song. so forget i even mentioned it.
i’m going to go and listen to some roxy music now, if that’s alright with you.
oh, ‘angie’, too. and ‘wild horses’. ok, i’ll go now.
