Journal / Sen(moby)sational!

hi.
flying from l.a to london.
with a headache. and that weird smell of airplane food cooking somewhere. and the sound of snoring businessmen. and that little gremlin on the wing banging on the engine. oh, wait, should i tell someone?

i wanted to write a little something about the way in which i’m portrayed in the press. i strongly believe in the freedom of the press and i respect the freedom that journalists have to write about me whatever they so choose. but i have to point out that a lot of articles about me are skewed in the interest of sensationalism (uh, especially in the uk…).

as i said, i respect the right of the press to write sensationalistic things about me, but i just wanted to say that oftentimes the portrayal of me that appears in the press is a bit skewed. and, having said that, oftentimes the way in which i’m portrayed in the press is quite fair, balanced, and spot-on. sometimes even in a negative way.

so what’s my point? that you can’t really believe everything that you read. i’m not a saint and i’m not a sybaritic hedonist. i have times of asceticism and times of hedonism. but we all do, right?

there are times when we all like to stay home and read and there are times when we all like to get drunk and scream from the rooftops. right?

in writing this i feel particularly narcissistic and platitudinal. of course we’re all multi-faceted, that’s just part and parcel of being human. or so i believe.

i guess that i wanted to write this update to say that if you read something about me that seems really odd or out of character, it probably is. and it’s probably been written in the interest of sensationalism. which is fine. and which can be entertaining. but we shouldn’t really conflate sensationalistic journalism with factual reporting. they’re both valid, but they’re both very different things altogether.

ok. thanks for reading.
