some people have been asking about the lyrics and subject matter for ‘raining again’.
well, here goes…
the title and concept were inspired by the creedence clearwater revival song ‘who’ll stop the rain?’, which is about feeling overwhelmed in the face of dismal and dark cultural and political circumstances.
so ‘raining again’ is a sort of mise-en-scene wherein you have a foreground where a relationship is falling apart as set against a background wherein the world is falling apart(sorry for the melodrama…).
on a personal note, when i was making ‘hotel’ i was mired in a state of incredulity that the americans had seemingly en masse pushed aside the progressive strides that had been made in the 60’s and 70’s and 80’s and 90’s and had taken a step backwards and found themselves in a sick 50’s where progressive social policies were cast aside in favor of ill-conceived right-wing social policies.
that’s the background for ‘raining again’.
kind of like the simpsons where homer keeps finding his hand stuck in the toaster.
that’s what america has become, 1 step forward, 10 steps back.
so ‘raining again’ is about a relationship falling apart while the world falls apart, as well.
