the whole issue of me as a ‘media person pop star etc’ is kind of interesting.
one reason that i’m involved with the media: mtv, the press, etc, is that i want to reach people. it might sound arrogant, but i like the music that i make and i, selfishly, want people to hear it. if i turn my back on the media, then fewer people will hear the music that i’ve made. i remember when i was younger and living in the suburbs i didn’t have access to ‘cool’ music and culture. i only found out about things that were presented to me in very conventional and un-cool ways.
i get a bit annoyed when people talk about keeping things ‘underground’. if things had been kept ‘underground’ when i was living in the suburbs i never would have found out about the sex pistols and the clash and public image ltd and public enemy and echo and the bunnymen and etc.
i love ‘underground’ music, but i also like a lot of ‘commercial’ music, too.
i like the prodigy and bjork and the chemical brothers and portishead and massive attack and etc. and all of these artists are signed to huge big ‘commercial’ major label record companies. and they all amke great music. and because of these huge big record companies their music reaches more people. and that’s good, isn’t it? as long as the music itself doesn’t suffer isn’t it ok if more people get to hear it?
i don’t know, that’s my opinion at least, sorry if it’s offensive.
