it’s interesting that the most vitriolic criticism that i receive tends to be directed at me when i express my political opinions.
isn’t that odd?
i care about the well being of people, and i care about the well being of animals, and i care about the well being of the environment.
and when i express my opinion about the aforementioned issues i am invariably barraged with a firestorm of vitriolic criticism.
and i’m sorry if i misspelled ‘barraged’. is it ‘baraged’?
that just looks weird.
so, ‘barraged’.
has anyone else noticed that politics actually does effect the quality of our lives?
do you pay taxes?
do you know anyone who’s unemployed?
do you ever see homeless people?
do you ever worry about air or water quality?
do you know anyone with cancer?
have you seen images of dead strangers in foreign lands?
are you concerned about crime?
are you concerned about education?
are you concerned about anything resulting from the way in which people interract with each other within a legislative context?
politics deals with all of these things, and more. and that’s why i try to draw attention to the political process.
i’m not a democrat.
i’m not a republican.
i’m not left wing.
i’m not right wing.
i’m a pragmatist. i try to see things from different perspectives, and make up my mind accordingly.
i honestly don’t care whether george bush is a democrat or a republican, except for the fact that republicans (newt gingrich, strom thurmond, bob barr, trent lott, jesse helms, bill frist, etc) tend to be atavistic and anachronistic and hypocritical and immoral.
if more republicans were like christine whitman or john mccain or colin powell, then i wouldn’t have a problem with republicans.
i might seem to be involved in partisan politics, but (as i said in another update today) i don’t care about party affiliation.
i do care about the ways in which the political process affects our lives and the lives of people whom we’ve never met and the lives of people who are unborn.
and that’s why i write about politics.
our collective apathy can only make things worse.
i don’t want you to agree with me, i just want you to be involved.
i’m sorry if my updates seem confrontational or contentious. but a lot of things are at stake right now. things that will effect us, and our children, and our grandchildren. and that’s why apathy in the face of great upheaval and change seems so pernicious and dangerous at this point in time.
so, be a republican or be a democrat. be labor or be tory. be a socialist or be a capitalist.
but please educate yourself and be involved.
thanks,
moby
