as you might now by now, my friend damian puts up little photo-essays on his web-site every couple of days. there’s a photo-essay on his site entitled ‘venturing south 11-21-01’ that i encourage everyone to take a look at. it’s comprised of a few pictures of a walk that he and i took to the area around ground-zero in manhattan. there are two pictures of what used to be the world trade center that are chilling, and i think that they’re a good reminder of the fact that on september 11th we really were attacked. i don’t want to dwell on the past, but i find that a lot of times we can process an event or experience in such a way that it becomes an abstraction of sorts. and especially given the media attention that has been generated by september 11th it can sometimes seem as if the attack has become a nebulous media event. but it really did happen. and i encourage everyone to visit the location of the former world trade center and to take a look at these couple of pictures on damians site (there is a link to his site in the ‘links’ section of my site).
a part of me thinks that the most fitting memorial to the world trade center and the people who lost their lives there would be to leave the wreckage exactly as it is. so that way future generations can see for themselves what happened. of course that will never happen given the value of that real-estate, but it would be a very sober and fitting testament and reminder.
thanks,
