Journal / oscars

oscars.
boy, apart from jon stewart they were really dull, huh?
jon stewart is great. if he ran for public office he’d get elected by a landslide.
my big question for the oscars: why do they televise all of the awards?
as a musician i’m glad that people win ‘best sound editing in a movie’, but why do they need to televise it?
and why the endless montages?
and why do they have endless filler and then cut people’s acceptance speeches?
and why the musical numbers?
the musical numbers are always bad.
ok, that’s me being cranky.
i’m glad that some good movies won some awards, although i was rooting for my friend marshall curry’s movie ‘street fight’. if you live in newark you should vote for cory booker.
my favorite movie of last year was ‘a history of violence’ but i didn’t really expect it to win any awards.
i’m glad that ‘capote’ and ‘brokeback’ did well, as they’re both very deserving, and it’s kind of a miracle that ‘capote’ has done as well as it has, seeing as it’s basically bennet miller’s first feature film.
i don’t understand the weird and latent homophobia that so many people have towards ‘brokeback mountain’. i haven’t seen it yet, but i’d like to. so many men seem to be terrified of this movie. why? cos it depicts gay romance and sex? what’s the big deal?
my theory is that many men are only tenuously holding on to their heterosexuality, and they’re afraid that if they watch ‘brokeback mountain’ that they’re going to get turned on.
i hear it’s a fantastic movie and i’m looking forward to seeing it.

everyone else is probably saying the same thing, but i think that it’s wonderful that two african-americans won the best actor and best actress awards at the oscars. it’s really nice when precedent can be set in such a positive and uplifting way.
