one question i’ve been asked is: ‘why aren’t there any songs from “animal rights” on “go: best of”?’
wait, did i already answer this?
if so: i’m sorry if i’m repeating myself(that’s what happens with: ageing, inbreeding, drinking, etc).
so why didn’t i include any songs from ‘animal rights’ on ‘go: best of’?
because ‘animal rights’ is my favorite of all of the albums that i’ve made, and i like the fact that very few people know about it.
i like that it’s sort of a hidden record.
it’s also a very strange and difficult record, and i’m sure that most of the people who’ve bought it have ended up regretting their purchase.
but of all of the albums that i’ve made it’s still my favorite, as dark and odd and difficult as it is.
and i like the fact that the few people who own it and have somehow ended up liking it are in a very, very small and obscure minority.
whenever it’s mentioned in the press it’s usually mentioned with the words ‘failure’, ‘terrible’,
‘dismal’, ‘awful’ attached to it.
which is great, as that just means that fewer people will hear it.
i know, maybe it’s odd for me to have a record that i don’t necessarily want everyone in the world to hear.
but i like it, and maybe you like it, and i like that it puts us in a weird, sparsely attended little club.
‘play’ and ’18’ and ‘hotel’ have, together, sold around 14,000,000 records.
‘animal rights’ sold, i believe, around 90,000 records.
which is perfect.
the criteria for success doesn’t always have to be ubiquity and lots of record sales.
