ok, i almost never go to see movies.
but this week i went to see ‘the devil and daniel johnston’ and ‘inside man’.
‘devil and daniel johnston’ is very good, but also very depressing.
depressing to watch someone spiral deeper and deeper into mental illness, and also depressing because in watching the movie you’re reminded that not all mentally ill people have record deals and gallery shows.
it’s good that daniel johnston has a record deal and fans and gallery shows. it’s great for him. but i couldn’t help but think of the millions and millions of mentally ill people who are just left to suffer with their mental illness.
and ‘inside man’ is great.
not profound. not epiphanous. but really satisfying and smart.
the soundtrack/score is really, really odd, but wonderful, too.
i can’t remember the last time that i saw a biggish budget hollywood movie that wasn’t mind-numbingly predictable and platitudinal.
maybe if ‘inside man’ is successful it will compel studio-heads to make smart movies again.
i don’t like reviewing movies(even fairly laconically), cos i’m always afraid that i’ll sound like steve harvey(i think that’s his name), the movie reviewer from the onion.
it’s my favorite part of the onion.
but i don’t want to sound like him.
so i’ll stop.
