ok, current events.
my favorite news headline today:
“New evidence suggests hobbits may have existed”
oh really? apparently these hobbits lived on indonesia. or in indonesia. although i’m guessing it wasn’t called indonesia back in hobbit times.
and sarah palin’s daughter bristol is doing a tour to promote abstinence. she is, of course, bringing her infant daughter with her. she is, of course, unmarried. er, uh, i mean couldn’t the ‘hooray abstinence!’ people have found a better spokesperson than an unwed teenage mom? bristol palin is doing the rounds, talking up abstinence on tv. but as far as i know no one has asked her, ‘are there any studies showing that abstinence programs actually work?’ because as far as i know abstinence programs are about as effective as, say, screen doors on submarines. tons of epidemiological studies, none showing that abstinence programs actually result in decreased rates of teen pregnancy or std transmission.
oh, and ‘epidemiological’ is just a cool word. tricky to pronounce, like ‘hegemony’. well, tricky for me.
hobbits in indonesia. unwed mom as spokeswoman for abstinence. lady with a new face. drunk kiefer sutherland head butting a journalist. the 24 hour news cycle really does yield up some gems.
