Journal / Obsessed With The News

i have to say that i’ve been obsessed with the news for the last couple of days, specifically the valerie plame/karl rove debacle.
to recap:
before the war in iraq a government employee named joseph wilson was sent to africa to check on claims that iraq was getting yellowcake uranium from niger.
wilson reported back that no, there was no iraq-niger uranium connection.
the bush administration were pissed off, and disregarded wilsons report in their rush to war.
wilson then wrote an op-ed piece for the new york times
criticizing the administrations rush to war.
the bush administration were even more pissed off, and some senior members of the bush administration leaked to the press that wilsons wife, valerie plame, was a covert cia agent, thus putting her and her family and her contacts at great risk.
to leak the name of a covert cia agent is a very serious crime, by the way.
an investigation was begun to find out who in the bush administration had leaked this information.
many people thought that karl rove was behind the leak (as he had done almost the exact same thing in 1992 while working for bush sr…), but the white house said that karl rove was innocent and added that whoever was responsible for or involved in the leak would be fired and probably subject to prosecution.
now it turns out from recently discovered emails that karl rove was involved in the leak.
and the white house isn’t saying a thing and they’re not responding to questions such as:
‘didnt you swear that rove wasn’t involved?’
‘didn’t you swear that whoever was involved would be fired?’
and so on.
it’s really fascinating, and i can only guess that bush and company aren’t sleeping very well at night.
and the democrats are finally being aggressive and pursuing rove with some very justified tenacity.
i have no idea how this will end up, but it’s kept me reading the news quite obsessively as of late.
