a very nice new york evening:
last night my friend lea carpenter helped to organize a reading at the paris review where norman mailer read a short story about dorothy parker(and held forth on the current state of american politics). the story was very funny, and norman mailer was in fine form: warm, enthusiastic, approachable.
after dinner we went to dinner at elaine’s(where woody allen wasn’t performing, unfortunately, as that would’ve made the nice new york evening even more complete)where we had dinner with mayor bloomberg.
and, forgive me if this isn’t a popular thing to say right now, but i think that mayor bloomberg is doing a fine job as mayor. i particularly appreciate the fact that he’s able to make decisions about running the city without being beholden to pernicious special interests. autonomy is a good quality when it comes to mayor-ing, i think.
all in all it was a really nice new york evening.
