if anyone is looking for some interesting reading material, i highly recommend that you pick up the most recent new yorker (with a black and red military/fireworks cartoon on the cover). there’s an article about o.j simpson that is just stupendous.
some of o.j’s quotes are tragic and comic in equal measure: ‘if i saw nicole walking down the street i’d try to pick her up. but only if she had a different head.’ when i was much younger i was at a nightclub (maybe this was 1990?) and i danced next to o.j.
he was in a suit. dancing with a woman. and he danced very, very awkwardly. he danced the way african american comedians dance when they’re making fun of the way white people dance. and i remember thinking, ‘oh, theres o.j simpson. hmm…he sure does dance like a white guy’. which is probably what you would’ve thought as well.
if you’d seen him dance. there was another great article in this weeks new yorker about the palestinian suicide bombers. ok, replace ‘great’ with ‘terrifying’ in that last sentence. even in the most dire of personal/political circumstances i still don’t see how anyone can rejoice at someone elses pain. the pain of another human being is always something to be mourned, regardless of circumstance.
at least that’s my opinion. but maybe i’d feel differently if i were talking about the pain of someone who had hurt someone i loved. i hope that none of us have to be faced with those circumstances. ok, production rehearsal tomorrow, so i should go to sleep.
