all of this conflict about the state flag in georgia has made me realize that i don’t even know what the new york state flag looks like.
is it a dancing pigeon?
a stripper standing by niagra falls?
a pretzel?
i have no idea.
and i don’t want to involve myself in the state politics of a state that is far from my state (yes, i’m proud of myself for using ‘state’ 3 times in one sentence). but it does seem to be ethically questionable to have a state flag that incorporates elements of the confederate flag, seeing as the confederate flag was in many ways a symbol of slavery and racism.
if the people of georgia (or other states where the confederate flag has been an issue) want a symbol of southern pride couldn’t they find something other than the confederate flag?
maybe southern states could fly flags with images of southern writers or musicians?
flannery o’connor? james baldwin? robert johnson? tennesee williams? r.e.m? walker percy? master p?
just some suggestions.
and might i suggest that the new york state flag henceforth be a rendering of a pigeon dancing while eating a pretzel? or a pigeon stripper eating a pretzel by niagara falls? maybe saying ‘are you talkin’ to me?’
that would be great.
