Journal / ‘Mulholland Drive’

you know, i’m a huge david lynch fan. but i just saw ‘mulholland drive’, and it left me unsatisfied. it’s a movie full of scenes that were culled from a tv show that lynch made that never aired. so the end result is david lynch’s typical disregard for a cohesive narrative, but apparently without much intention or forethought. i loved ‘lost highway’, but the disregard for conventional narrative in ‘lost highway’ felt purposeful, and even though it was absurd it still felt like the absurdity was contained within the context of an over-arching meta-narrative. with ‘mulholland drive’ it feels as if david lynch shot alot of really cool scenes with interesting characters and he wanted to do something with them. but the movie just feels like a pot pourri of absurdity.
sometimes it’s great and compelling, but it all feels a bit pointless by the end. and it’s a shame, too, cos the good scenes in ‘mulholland drive’ are magnificent. and the developing narrative with the two women in the first 2/3rds of the movie is really compelling. ah well.

i hope that someone let’s him actually turn this into a tv show. for if it were stretched out i’m sure that the surreality of the picture wouldn’t feel so arbitrary.
some of the scenes really are just amazing, and there’s one scene that’s so sexy…oh boy.
ok, sorry to sound like a po-faced grad student. and in some ways ‘mulholland drive’ is almost worth seeing for the few scenes that really are spectacular.
