yes, part and parcel of being home in manhattan for a while is the ability to do simple things like eat the spinach dumplings at vp3 and to watch movies.
today i went to a matinee of ‘minority report’, and i might not be voicing a popular opinion when i say this, but i really liked it.
when did tom cruise become so edgy? ‘eyes wide shut’ ‘magnolia’ ‘vanilla sky’ ‘minority report’? ‘minority report’ is not without it’s flaws, and it could’ve been 30 minutes shorter, but boy, the good parts were great. i will probably go see it again just to bask in the overall aesthetic of the film. the scene in the hotel room was phenomenal. and i have a huge crush on the female pre-cog.
but i’m a geek and i grew up watching science fiction and reading philip k. dick, so of course i was bound to like this movie.
i love the fact that steven spielberg and tom cruise are going out of their way to be as dark and experimental as possible. some of the shots and cinematography in ‘minority report’ were just stunning.
yes, i have to see it again. just to watch the shots. certainly one of the most visually arresting things that i’ve seen in ages.
are these really the same people who made ‘hook’ and ‘top gun’? and is there really going to be a re-make of ‘solaris’? will it be 18 hours long like tarkovsky’s original? remaking ‘solaris’, from a sci-fi geeks perspective, is akin to remaking ‘rules of the game’ or ‘citizen kane’.
but steven soderbergh is an honorable director.
i’m sure he’ll do a good job. but it’s fairly hallowed ground that he’s treading in re-doing solaris.
eh, we’ll see.
goodnight.
