do you know about max cleland?
max cleland was a senator from georgia who was defeated in 2002 after a vicious campaign waged by republicans who claimed that he was unpatriotic.
max cleland is also a vietnam veteran who lost both of his legs and one of his arms in vietnam when he picked up a grenade that someone else had thrown.
he was decorated for his service in vietnam as well, earning the prestigious silver star.
the republicans waged a smear campaign against max cleland, stating that he was unpatriotic and running advertisements juxtaposing his face with osama bin laden’s and saddam hussein’s.
george bush personally campaigned against max cleland, again calling him ‘unpatriotic’.
just recently ann coulter, a right-wing, republican political columnist, made fun of max cleland and actually made light of the fact that he lost his legs and his arm in service to his country in vietnam.
i try to be calm, and i try not to let anger cloud my judgement, but when the republicans cast aspersions on the patriotism of a vietnam veteran who lost both of his legs and one of his arms while serving his country it makes me furious.
for people like george bush and ed gillespie and rush limbaugh(none of whom served in vietnam, rush limbaugh got a draft deferment for hemorrhoids…)to criticize decorated veterans like john kerry and max cleland is some of the most evil hypocrisy to which this country has ever been exposed.
