i wrote a little piece for the ny times about nyc, i thought you might like to see it:
ok, call me predictable, but my favourite thing in myc is tompkins square park, especially the dog-run. as i’m currently without a dog i can’t actually go into the dog-run, but i, and many like me, often stand for hours at the fence surrounding the dog-run just watching and laughing.
a perfect saturday afternoon for me involves walking through the east village, going out for lunch, and then stopping in tompkins square park to watch the dogs. i’ve been to the other dog-runs in the city, and while they’re all quite nice, i do feel a sort of provincial attachment to the dog-run in tompkins square park.
it’s the dog-run in the park that i’ve grown up with, and it never fails to make me happy. except for those few days every couple of months when it’s closed while they change the cedar chips. those days are the dog-run equivalent of good friday, for while they’re kind of sad and dogless, they portend the impending re-birth of a fresh and less stinky place for the dogs to play.
