Journal / list time again

list time again:

a – i watched ‘anvil: the movie’ on the flight over from new york. it really is an amazing movie. the main characters are so painfully endearing. in a weird way it made me love canada even more… and did anyone else notice that the drummer’s name is also the name of the man who directed and wrote ‘spinal tap’? (rob reiner). and the drummer’s edward hopper inspired paintings were surprisingly good.

b – ok, maybe not such a list, as i can’t think of much else to include.

c – i’m listening to the first 3 adam and the ants records, from dirk wears white sox to prince charming. they’re so good, and they definitely deserve a place in the credible music canon.

other albums/artists that are often overlooked in the canon… the first 5 simple minds albums. the first 3 orchestral manoevers in the dark albums. the chameleons uk. early a certain ratio. the gun club. polyrock. cowboys international. i’ll never understand why hipsters rediscover certain bands (pixies, mission of burma, the stooges, etc), and not others (the gun club, early simple minds, early omd, etc). i guess it doesn’t help that some bands (adam and the ants, simplel minds, omd) made truly amazing records followed by some records that weren’t, uh, so amazing. i guess the less amazing later records taint the early amazing records somehow. which is a shame.

d – it’s transit strike day in the uk. and the bnp (anti-immigrant quasi-fascist party) are gaining in popularity in the uk. it’s like 1976. bring on the punk rock.

e – ok, time to go to rehearsal and then to see ‘the hangover.’ i may be an ex-philosophy student, but my tastes in movies oftentimes run to the adolescent and puerile.

f – oh, i’m dj’ing at ‘matter’ here in london on saturday night. with trentemoller. and then the meltdown show tuesday at royal festival hall. but that’s sold out, no more tickets. ok, thanks
