there is an artist named james turrell whom i think more people should be familiar with. he’s well known in the art world, but what with the insular nature of the art world he’s not very well known by the general public.
his current, and on-going, project is roden crater in the american southwest.
from what i can tell, roden crater is a defunct volcano in the middle of nowhere that he is transforming into a remarkable work of art.
i first became aware of james turrell with an installation that he has at ps1 in brooklyn. it’s a large room with a retractable ceiling. when the ceiling is retracted it essentially frames the sky. people sit on the floor or on benches and look at the sky in a very simple and unobtrusive frame. it’s really a wonderful installation, and i know that it’s touched just about anyone who’s sat and experienced it.
if you can, spend a little time and find out more about this man and his work.
i’ll try to find a good site that deals with him and put it in the ‘links’ section.
thanks,
moby
