Journal / i’m going to write briefly about u.s politics because something happened today that i believe is truly, truly horrifying.

a couple of weeks ago republican representative todd akin started a news firestorm by trying to say that women who

are 'legitimately raped' can't get pregnant.

people were (and are) horrified, and even his own party has backed away from him.
one of todd akin's most stalwart supporters in the house of representatives has been paul ryan, who is now the vice presidential
nominee. paul ryan and todd akin have tried to make a case that there are different types of rape, and they've maintained that abortion should always be illegal, even in cases of rape and incest.

again, people were (and are) horrified at the thought of republican men saying that if a woman is gang-raped and she becomes pregnant that she should be forced to have the child, or that if a woman is raped by a family member that she should be forced to have the child.
it's horrifying, utterly horrifying and misogynistic.
but today paul ryan said something that managed to lower the bar on 'horrifying'.
in an interview he referred to rape as just another "method of conception".
i'm stunned that anyone could consider voting for romney-ryan, or any republican, for a number of reasons.
but the atavistic and vitriolic disregard that todd akin, paul ryan, and their fellow republicans have for women's rights and health issues is staggering.
here's the article:
