Journal / Howard Dean

my condolences to howard dean and his supporters upon dr. dean’s decision to remove himself from the race.
my hope is that the people who were fired up about dr. dean and his very dynamic campaign will take their enthusiasm and use it to support whoever ends up getting the democratic nomination.
i had a conversation with an older man this evening who has voted republican his entire life, and even he’s dismayed with bush.
we agreed that with bush you get the worst of all worlds in that he has practiced no fiscal responsibility, has disastrous foreign policy initiatives, has all of the social tolerance of a southern fire-n-brimstone preacher, and has created the largest federal government in the history of the united states(as well as the largest federal deficit).
and this wasn’t me saying these things, these bon mots were coming out of the mouth of a very bright older man who has been a registered republican for over 40 years and who will most likely vote for john kerry in the next election.
i hope that even die-hard republicans recognize that the bush presidency has been a disaster by anyone’s standards, be they republican or democrat.
i personally look forward to a time when republicans will put aside the fire-n-brimstone agenda of the religious right and get back to their traditional strengths such as foreign policy, fiscal responsibility, and social libertarianism.
this country has traditionally been made better and stronger by the dialectic that occurs between the right and the left, but the right have gone so egregiously far off center that they’ve become a liability to themselves and to this country.
