Journal / here’s a playlist of the best hip hop records that were mainstays of my hip hop sets in the late 80’s

a few months ago i put up a post of my favorite old house tracks.

most of them were records that i loved and played obsessivley in the late 80’s at mars, the club where i worked for 3 years in the late 80’s (now it’s been torn down and turned into a 25 story luxury hotel…ah, nyc, endlessly cannibalizing itself…)

i played house music on saturday nights on the main floor, but also played hip hop on the 2nd floor on thursday nights and sometimes friday nights. (a bit of trivia: when i played hip hop at mars i’d keep a microphone in the dj booth and the mc’s hanging out at mars would come and freestyle over the instrumentals i played. so over the years i ended up dj’ing for big daddy kane and 3rd base and ultramagnetic’s and run dmc and others).

so, here’s a playlist of the best hip hop records that were mainstays of my hip hop sets in the late 80’s.
i hope you love them, from when hip hop was truly amazing.
