good morning, and i hope that you had a nice weekend. on saturday night i went to see ‘stoked: the rise and fall of gator’,which was directed by my friend helen stickler. i have 3 friends making documentaries, helen stickler, lucy walker, and andrew jarecki, and they’ve all made great movies in the last year, so congratulations to them.
‘stoked’ is about the skate legend ‘gator’ and his precipitous rise to fame and his equally precipitous fall into ignominy. i won’t give anything away, but his fall is spectacularly depressing.
when i was growing up i skated a bit, but i was never very good at it and i mainly skated as a way of getting around (and skateboards are outstanding tools for moving crates of records from a taxi to a nightclub).
as a non-sequitur, i have a homer simpson doll where he’s wearing a coconut bra and a grass skirt and if you tap him on the head he does the hula. i believe that it would be impossible to be depressed if you had a little plastic homer simpson doll wearing a coconut bra doing the hula in front of you.
