flying to mexico.
arriba.
and i just watched the last 4 minutes of ‘maid in manhattan’, but without sound. can you imagine a world without disposable popular culture?
perish the thought.
oh, another film. let’s see if it’s as poignant and germaine as ‘maid in manhattan’… the most recent bond film. hmm. do i have a good book anywhere?
sorry, i’m being cranky.
or curmudgeonly.
i should probably keep my opinions about popular culture to myself.
no one likes a cranky curmudgeon. unless they (the curmudgeons, not the people liking them) are stadtler and waldorf, the old-guy curmudgeons from the muppet show.
i guess the lesson to be learned from them (statdler and waldorf) is that cynicism and curmudgeonism (it really is a word, really, i got 598 points in scrabble from spelling ‘curmudgeonism’.
no i didn’t. and i don’t think that it’s a word. but you get the point.) are ok as long as they’re entertaining. i mean we all know that 98% of the drivel that passes for popular entertainment is drivel, so there’s not really much point in pointing out that 98% of the drivel that passes for popular entertainment is, in fact, drivel. but if you can be a cynical curmudgeon and make people laugh, well then you can complain until the cows come home. which is a stupid expression. ‘until the cows come home’ is supposed to denote a long period of time. but don’t most cows live at home anyway?
it’s not like dairy farmers send their cows on glamorous around the world trips and then wait with baited breath for them to return home. the cows are already home. they only leave when they get sent to the glue or shoe-leather factory.
right?
i live in new york city. i’m a lily-livered city-boy, so i know nothing about the day to day operations of a dairy farm. maybe cows routinely join the peace corps and spend years away from home. i have no idea. but popular culture still sucks.
well, most of it. some of it’s ok. well, some of the cartoons are o.k. most non-animated popular culture is pretty lame. what’s not lame, let’s see…among other things i would have to say:
goldfrapp, interpol, the simpsons, south park, lilo & stitch, david lynch, sigur ros, and so on and whatnot. i guess i’m nothing if not predictable.
ooh, turbulence. maybe i’ll take a nap.
turbulence makes me sleepy.
