washington (reuters) – citing figures that show most americans are overweight, health and human services secretary tommy thompson said on wednesday he would ask for $100 million to encourage them to get healthier.
that’s encouraging. although a good place to start might be to end the federal subsidies for meat and dairy production. it would be slightly ironic for taxpayers to spend $100 million dollars to counterract the effects of the billions of dollars in federal subsidies that the government has given to meat and dairy producers. but it’s still an encouraging step, although i’m sure thatwhatever the $100 million dollars ends up being spent on will be incredibly watered down so as to not offend the special interest lobbying groups (meat and dairy producers, tobacco producers, fast food producers, etc) who contributed to the bush campaign.
ah well, i guess it’s encouraging that someone in the bush administration has actually drawn attention to the fact that eating meat and dairy and junk food can contribute to or cause poor health.
