Journal / Dutch Dawn

in amsterdam again.
hi.
looking out at this beautiful courtyard as the sun starts to rise. and it just dawned (no pun intended) on me that this tree in the courtyard is huge. i’m in an 8 storey building, and the tree is taller than the top floor. so how old is this tree? 100’s of years old? 50 years old?
amsterdam is a wonderful city. why can’t more of the world be like the netherlands (well, barring assasinations, of course)?
the netherlands is a country of pragmatism and tolerance. great architecture, great art, great cities, great culture.
ah well, i’m a fan. i wish that the rest of the world were more like the netherlands. the netherlands certainly isn’t perfect, but they do seem to avoid a lot of the unnecessary problems that most countries manufacture for themselves.
and i’m looking out at the courtyard and the wind is blowing through the leaves of the giant tree and the sky is getting lighter and lighter and the world seems nice.
and i’m a simpleton. but the world seems nice.
civility might be boring at times, but it’s certainly preferable to corruption, deceit, cruelty, and intolerance. right? or am i just being naive?
given the amount of corruption, deceit, cruelty, and intolerance in the world you’d think that we humans oftentimes prefer shit over cleanliness.
i hope that’s not true. and it’s late/early, as it often is when i write my updates.
going to portugal in few hours. so i’ll write more later.
