ok. i’ll make this simple.
i went out tonight to a remarkable club where they played remarkable soul records. and it made me happy. cos the records were amazing. and it made me sad. cos music made with computers is oftentimes terrific, but what about an amazing soul record made with 9 people in a room playing amazing sexy dance/soul music?
i think, forgive me for saying this, that a lot of electronic musicians would do well to turn off their computers for 6 months and play music with other people. after 6 months they could go back to their computers. but making music with other people, with other amazing musicians, can be so unbelievably special, as evidenced by these amazing soul records that i heard tonight.
yes. i sound dim. but i’m serious. just go listen to some amazing old soul records. big records. with horns and drums and basslines. why can’t we all make records like that?
don’t get me wrong. i love dance/electronic music. and rock music. but a 9 piece(aka-the meters, the jb’s, al green, etc)band can be a thing of remarkable beauty and transcendence.
ok, i’ll stop now. go make amazing music. it’ll make our lives better.
