ok, i’m going out to dj. and i never dj.
hopefully the nice people in tokyo won’t throw garbage at me. i know beyond a shadow of a doubt that i’ll be the least cool dj in japan tonight.
i’ll certainly be the only dj playing rave anthems from 1991… but seeing as i never, ever dj i feel like i might as well play fun music that makes me (and others?) happy.
right? i like old rave anthems. old ravers never die, they just play altern-8 in tokyo nighclubs in 2002. ‘frequency, frequency,….’ maybe i’ll drink tequila and get on the mic and be the ultra -pathetic guy shouting out ‘feel the rush!’ ‘tokyo vibes in the area!’ ha ha ha.
that’d be funny, right? right? well, it’d be funny to me. maybe i’ll even bring a dreadlock wig and pretend to be a uk rasta mc circa 1991. ‘hear me now!’ ‘rewind selecta!’ wouldn’t that be awful? me in a dreadlock wig pretending to be a uk rasta mc from 1991? that’s the sort of thing that you do if you lose a bet.
well, wish me luck. the last time i dj’ed was last august with carl cox and paul oakenfold at the area:one after party in nyc. i had fun cos i got drunk and played my favorite old rave anthems. i figure that i have nothing to prove as a dj, so i might as well play the fun records that everyone else wishes they could play… it was nice seeing all the cool people dancing to ‘dream frequency’ and ‘blame’. remember those records? sl-2? the hypnotist? bizarrre inc? back in the days when a noisy synth riff and a public enemy sample could make 30,000 people blow whistles and wave glow sticks in the air? ah, sweet nostalgia…
oh, for those of you who have no idea what i’m talking about just remember, i’m old.
and my cultural references might be a bit obscure. so, allow an old man his indulgences, ok?
time to go play some records. and it only happens once or twice a year (me dj’ing, that is), so i might as well have fun.
thanks,
moby
