ok,
i’m not trying to start anything here, but while we were in tarvisio something kind of odd happened…
we went and did a little sightseeing and shopping and we stopped into a gift-shop.
looking around at some of the cute tyrolean knick-knacks (an alpine hat, alpine refrigerator magnets, etc) i discoverd a hand-carved wooden bust of hitler. for sale for 30 euros.
suffice it to say it was a pretty disturbing thing to find in a cute little gift shop.
then later we went to a wine shop and found some bottles of wine with pictures of hitler and mussolini on them.
again, suffice it to say that this was even more disturbing, especially as we had seen the handcarved bust of hitler just a few hours earlier.

now i’m neither austrian, italian, or slovenian, so i don’t want to presume to understand their culture, but selling busts of hitler and bottles of wine decorated with pictures of hitler and mussolini is seriously fucked up.
everything else that we saw in tarvisio was wonderful. beautiful mountains, nice people, clean air, etc.
but what is going on when stores are openly selling products that seemingly glorify the likenesses of hitler and mussolini?
like i said, it’s very fucked up.
and like i said, i’m not trying to start anything. we had a great time in tarvisio, and i maintain that it’s one of the most beautiful parts of the world that i’ve ever visited.
but seeing these hitler & mussolini decorated products left a very sour taste in my mouth.

the 20th and 21st centuries have seen a lot of bizarre celebrity meltdowns. and a lot of instances where celebrities have behaved boorishly or unethically. but michael jackson dangling a baby off of a 4th floor balcony really does just about take the cake.
that photograph is one of the most disturbing things that i’ve seen in a long while.
i don’t even think that i can make a lighthearted quip about it.
it’s just upsetting.
