in chicago this weekend a group of gay men in a catholic church were denied communion.
where in the bible does it say that it’s ok to go give communion to people who’ve been divorced, and people who’ve been in jail, and people who’ve broken the law, and people who’ve committed adultery, and people who love money, and etc, but that it’s not ok to give communion to people who are gay?
it would seem to me, and this is just my perspective, that christs teachings stressed the virtues of compassion and non-judgementalism, and that christ also stressed the need for religious leaders to be loving, compassionate, humble, and non-judgemental.
if christ tought the virtues of tolerance and compassion, then how do his servants justify turning away some of the people whose practices contravene the teachings of the catholic church, especially when any catholic church on any sunday is filled with people receiving communion whose lives and practices contravene the teachings of the catholic church?
it strikes me as so bizarre that the catholic church and the religious right in america are so preoccupied with issues that christ never even mentioned(abortion and homosexuality), but that the catholic church and the religious right in america seemingly turn a blind eye to the things that christ actually tought(non-violence, compassion, love, humility, non-judgementalism).
