Journal / Debate Last Night

did you watch the vice-presidential debate last night?
i have to say that dick cheney did surprisingly well, and although he seemed defensive and fidgety at times, he definitely came across as erudite and informed.
i thought that john edwards also did well, but last nights debate was certainly a far cry from the kerry/bush debate of last thursday wherein senator kerry looked dignified and responsible, and george bush looked like an underprepared school-boy.
the one thing that struck me about last night’s debate was that dick cheney kept repeating things that he knew to be untrue. he described the situations in iraq and afghanistan in very sunny terms, when his own republican associates have said that the situations in iraq and afghanistan are unmitigated disasters.
he described the economy in fairly sunny terms, when his administrations policies have resulted in the loss of 2 million jobs.
the debaters themselves were fairly well-matched, and i would even say that dick cheney might have had a slight edge as a debater, but the issues themselves once again demonstrated that the bush/cheney administration have done a terrible job in running the country.
