Journal / Dark Dom

the dom, aka-the giant light-sucking cathedral in koln.
in some ways i think that it’s worth a trip to koln just to look at this cathedral. every time that i’ve been to koln (and i’ve been here maybe 30 times in my life) i’ve marvelled at this cathedral. it is just so fucking huge and dark and ominous.

right now it’s dawn and the sky is pink and blue and soft and delicate and there are little bunnies hopping around by the river (really, i’m not just being poetic) and the dom is just sitting there, dripping with ominous blackness.
it is so interesting. it doesn’t seem particularly malevolent, just dark. it kind of radiates darkness, even during a lovely, rosy dawn.
i wonder how many peasants soiled their breeches when confronted with this cathedral.
i’ve seen a lot of cathedrals in my life, but the dom stands alone in its ability to have inspired abject fear in a medieval populace.
but i can’t stop looking at it. it is also the most strangely organic and biomorphic building i’ve ever seen. even more so than gaudi’s barcelona cathedral. cos the dom wasn’t supposed to be biomorphic. but it is. it looks like a giant, inverted subterranean cavern. like a giant, exposed, upside-down cave.
with teeth.
ok, enough about the dom. but it’s worth a trip to koln (which is a very nice city, by the way) just to see the dom.

and in other news, can i ask you a question?
a serious question?
what purpose does it serve when the administration says that there’s going to be another huge terrorist attack but that they don’t know where or when?
does it serve to:
a-empower the terrorists
b-terrify the living daylights out of every citizen of the united states
c-give journalists something ambiguous and unconstructive to talk about
d-all of the above
i vote for ‘d’.
it’s like going to a fortune teller and having them say ‘something terrible is going to happen to you in the relatively near future but i can’t say what it is or when it might happen. and, oh, there’s nothing you can do to protect yourself.’
how is that constructive?
does dick cheney get turned on by terrifying us?
