is it just me, or are jack black and tenacious d taking over the world?
i remember the first time that i saw them play it was in las vegas, new mexico (yes, there really is a las vegas, new mexico) in 1982 and there were maybe 3 people in the audience.
but they put on a great show. and a long show. they played for 18 hours straight.
and it was amazing. they didn’t even repeat a single song. and now they’re selling out madison square garden and i hear they’ve even been given their own tv show.
what’s going on? i understand the allure that they have, what with their status as the ‘greatest rock and roll band in the world’, but it does seem as if things might be getting out of hand. just a bit. i recently (a few months ago) saw tenacious d at the ‘upright citizens brigade’ theater in nyc, and it was quite a spectacle. the ‘u.c.b’ is a giant, elegant theater that holds around 6,000 people.
and the reception that tenacious d received was staggering. it was quite a show, what with the lights and the percussion and the choreography, and i have to say that my heart went out to the security people.
throughout the show i counted over 500 women being carried away after being overcome by heat or lust. raw naked lust. that’s what tenacious d inspire in people. in men they inspire lust for their mind-blowing rock and in women (and 10% of the men) they inspire lust for their heavy sexuality.
but it’s a strange thing to watch, their ascent to the realm of superstardom.
i just hope that they can handle the pits and falls of fame as well as some of their idols have.
although i just read that jack and kg were offering mc hammer $20 million dollars for his oakland estate. so perhaps the long, slippery slope to ‘behind the music’ has already begun.
i, for one, hope not.
good luck to the d.
