Journal / Blackout and Energy Utility Deregulation

so the truth seems to be coming out about the big blackout. and the truth is very weird.

as far as i can tell it seems as if the blackout was the product of very shoddy management practices in the wake of the deregulation of the energy markets. this deregulation apparently began during the reagan and bush-1 years, and was then rolled back during the clinton years after deregulation fiasco’s like the rolling blackouts in california.

and then when george bush jr. came into office he, at the behest of enron, his biggest campaign contributor, undid the clinton era regulations and vigorously promoted utility deregulation.

so if you want to blame anyone for the blackout(i wonderwhat the total cost of the east coast blackouts and california’s rolling blackouts have been? $100 billion? $500 billion?), blame the bushes and the republicans for their pursuit and promotion of energy utility deregulation.

i have a feeling that even after bush is gone we’re going to be dealing with his foul legacy for a long time to come.
