washington (reuters) – senate democratic leader tom daschle warned on tuesday that republican leaders must pull language from a broad energy bill that allows drilling in the arctic national wildlife refuge, or the legislation will be defeated.

well, that’s good.
it’s nice to see that the democrat’s are actually starting to stand up to bush and his band of evil, oil-blooded cohorts.
as we all know, oil from the anwr wouldn’t reach the domestic market until 2012, and it would only diminish the u.s reliance upon foreign oil by 2%.
and, as we all know, the only way to reduce u.s reliance upon foreign oil is to promote conservation and the development of alternative energy sources.
and ‘alternative energy sources’ cannot mean nuclear and coal, as dick ‘i have oil running through my heart & veins’ cheney is wont to say.
there are loads of alternative (and sustainable and even non-polluting, in some cases) energy sources that will become increasingly viable if given the sort of subsidized support that the oil, coal, and nuclear energy consortiums have been receiving for the last 50 years.
just a reminder, america needs to lessen it’s dependence upon foreign oil because:
a-our dependence upon foreign oil has compromised almost every aspect of our foreign policy.
b-our dependence upon foreign oil has subjected us to the cultural and diplomatic whims of third world despots.
c-oil is, after all, a finite resource. and whether it lasts another 50 or 75 or 100 years, it will eventually run out and we will eventually have to develop alternative, and sustainable, sources of energy. so why not now?
d-oil pollutes like a mofo. producing it, refining it, shipping it, distributing it, selling it, and using it all involve practices that are incredibly damaging from an environmental standpoint.
e-alternative energy sources can be developed at home, thus bringing remarkable economic gains to the people and companies who develop the means of producing viable and sustainable and non-polluting alternative energy sources.

so not only is it good for the democrats to stand up to bush and the energy companies who bought him his presidency, but there needs to be a bi-partisan push for the implementation of conservation measures and the development of alternative energy sources that will, over time, eliminate our dependence upon foreign oil.
thanks,
