Journal / Advise To Airlines

vegan update. be warned.
travelling vegan update.
i’m sitting here on a nice little plane flying from athens to budapest and the nice flight attendant just brought me what could be a nice vegan meal.
the purpose of this email is not to complain about the foul, overcooked swill that was just put in front of me, but rather to offer some suggestions to people in the food-service industry.
vegan food doesn’t have to be difficult.
if by any chance you work in some aspect of the airline or food-service industry let me recommend a few things that most travelling vegans would be happy to eat:
1-spaghetti and tomato sauce. what could be easier? and who doesn’t like spaghetti and tomato sauce?
2-rice and beans. we vegans are simple people, and what’s simpler than rice and beans? a little plate of nicely cooked rice and beans with some salsa on the side and we’ll be happy.
3-for that matter, rice and tofu, or rice and tempeh. simple, with something nice to put on the food, like soy sauce or sea salt.
and when it comes to vegetables…vegetables don’t need to be cooked for an hour in order to be edible.
most vegetables are nicer when they’re raw, or cooked for a very brief period of time. i have in front of me some broccoli and spinach that has been cooking since before the wall came down.
ok, those are my simple suggestions to the airline food service industry. most of the time when airline food goes wrong it’s because they’ve tried to do too much, as is the case with the monstrosity sitting in front of me.
overcooked spinach, broccoli, & carrots, with some rice and runny mushrooms and some eggplant in tomato sauce that looks and tastes like the skin off of someone’s foot. in the right hands this meal could’ve been nice. but like i said, this isn’t a complaint, it’s a bucket of suggestions. cooked vegetables just don’t travel well. whereas cooked rice and beans and spaghetti and etc travel well and can be reheated easily and quickly.
i’ve had some decent vegan meals on airplanes. british airways seems to get it right every now and then. and i had a vegan enchilada on…american airlines? united? that was pretty good.
but 24 times out of 25 the vegan food on airplanes is inedible.
thus my presumptuous email here.
thanks
