Journal / Advice

still ill.
and i’m riding out the mighty blizzard. my goodness, there must be 3, maybe even four inches of snow on the ground! good thing i stocked my closets with cans of pumpkin pie mix and aabatteries. the national guard will be on the streets restoring order soon.
what a farce…everyone’s geared up for the biggest snowstorm since the roman empire, and instead we get a couple of cute little inches of snow and even some rain, to boot. ah well, there’re still a few hours left for us to feel the fury of this monster storm.

and i was thinking of the questions that i answered for everybody, and there was one question that was asked a few times that i might not have paid enough attention to. the question was ‘what advice would i give to a musician who’s just starting up?’
i gave fairly practical advice.
my more esoteric advice would be to think about the following questions:
what if elvis presley had said ‘but white people don’t sing rhythm & blues’
what if the beatles had said ‘but rock bands don’t use orchestral arrangements’
what if donna summer & giorgio moroder had said ‘you can’t make disco with electronic instruments and sequencers’
what if run dmc had said ‘you can’t sample aerosmith, they’re a rock band’
what if massive attack had said ‘but cool dance artists don’t put singers on their records’

do you get my point? great music is usually made by people who are more interested in making great music than in adhering to the tradition of what has come before.
so my advice would be: go and experiment. musical innovation is usually the product of love and mistakes.
